Dating safety guide
How to verify a dating profile before you meet
Before you give someone your evening, make sure the person you've been talking to is real. These checks take minutes and can save you hours, and sometimes a lot more.
1. Look for real verification
Many profiles show a verification badge, but badges vary a lot in what they actually confirm. Check whether the person has verified their identity with a selfie or ID, not just a phone number.
On DateDish, you can see a match's verification details and Trust Score™ before you agree to anything, whichever app or place you met them on.
Look for a real selfie, not just profile photos
Profile photos can be borrowed, filtered or years old. A recent selfie is much harder to fake. On DateDish, nobody can message you until they've uploaded a selfie in addition to their profile photos, and you can see it. No selfie, no chat: that keeps bots and fake accounts out of your messages.
2. Run a reverse image search
Fake profiles often reuse photos taken from someone else's social media. Upload one or two of their photos to a reverse image search. If the same photos appear under a different name, that's a strong warning sign.
No results doesn't prove they're real, but a mismatch is worth taking seriously.
3. Ask for a quick video call
A short video call is the fastest way to confirm that the person matches their photos. Someone genuine is usually happy to say hi on camera. Repeated excuses, especially early on, are a red flag.
4. Check that the details add up
Does their job, school or neighborhood line up with what they've told you? Small inconsistencies happen, but stories that keep changing usually mean something.
5. Let people who know them vouch
Mutual friends are one of the best signals there is. DateDish's Wingman Validation™ lets people who actually know your match vouch for them, so you get real-world credibility instead of a polished bio.
Red flags to watch for
- They avoid video calls or meeting in person after weeks of talking.
- They push to move the conversation off the app very quickly.
- Any request for money, gift cards or crypto, for any reason.
- Photos that look professional or too polished for a casual profile.
- Pressure, urgency or a story that sounds too good to be true.
Verify, then secure the date
Once you know who you're meeting, lock in a real plan. With DateDish date requests, one person picks the venue, day and time; the other accepts or suggests another option; and once you agree, it's locked in. No ghosting, no guesswork, just time well spent.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if a dating profile is fake?
Look for identity verification, run a reverse image search on their photos, ask for a short video call, and watch for red flags like refusing to meet or asking for money.
Is a verified badge enough?
Not always. Badges confirm different things on different apps. Check what was actually verified, and combine it with a video call and other signals.
Can DateDish verify someone I met on another app?
Yes. DateDish works alongside any dating app. You can check verification details, Trust Score and Trust Badges, or use Wingman Validation, wherever you met.
